After testing various motor brands and styles, we’ve concluded that the best choice is a USA made 2 HP 4 pole (3 Phase) 1800 RPM motor, driven with a variable frequency drive (VFD) to give precise regulated speed control, full torque at lower speeds, a max speed of 3600 RPM.

Leeson 2hp Motor

Leeson Motor

Our go to motor option is the Leeson TEFC 2HP 4 pole AC motor. It’s a perfect companion to the KB-27D VFD, giving it an effective 3600 RPM with 110v or 220v connection.

Made for limited exposure to water, dust, and mild corrosives, this motor is good choice for the dusty environment that inevitably surrounds a belt grinder.

Baldor 2hp Motor

Baldor Motor

Our best motor, the Baldor VM3558 2HP motor is the best way to drive your grinder! Similar in most ways to the Leeson we offer with our standard grinder packages, the Baldor has a larger arbor shaft before being turned down to the 5/8” shaft diameter with larger heaver ball bearings for better performance and a longer life. But there’s a catch, due to new EPA efficiency ratings, this excellent motor has been discontinued and will be replaced with a newer model that does not work as well with a VFD.

We’ve managed to acquire all of the remaining stock from Baldor and will be offering this motor exclusively in our Pro Grinder Package, while supplies last.

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

Variable Frequency Drive

For the most control and best operation on a 2x72 belt grinder, a direct drive motor and variable frequency drive (VFD) is the best way to go! This gives speed control with the turn of knob (potentiometer), protects your motor from overload, and comes in a NEMA4 Enclosure which is dust, grit proof and watertight so all that grinder dust can’t eat the expensive components! It also has as on/off power switch, start/stop switch, and led signal light. It’s compatible with a forward/reverse switch as an upgrade.

We chose to offer the industry standard KB-27D VFD. It is manufactured in the USA by KB electronics. The KB-27D is a digital AC drive with analog interface and pulse width modulation (PWM) to control the motor speed without loss of torque. The proprietary CL Software Provides overload protection prevents motor burnout and eliminates nuisance tripping. UL approved as electronic overload protector for motors. It is not compatible with gfci outlets.
Energy Saving thanks to PWM, the controller uses only the power required for the current speed, replacing constant speed with variable speed will significantly reduce energy costs.

VFD Mounting Bracket

Our VFD mounting bracket makes it simple to setup your new grinder, motor and VFD combination. Made of laser cut steel plate with a black finish, the VFD mounting bracket bolts to the grinder chassis on one end and the VFD on the other end, positioning the VFD above the motor in easy reach and out of the way of the rest of your work bench.

While not absolutely necessary, you’ll need to mount the VFD someplace, why not take the easy way out and get on with the fun part, making knives!

Wiring Service

Where does that red wire go again? Don’t want to worry about wiring your new motor and VFD? Let us do it for you!

With our Standard and Pro packages we completely wire the motor to the VFD and wire the VFD to the power cord for a plug and play setup. The motor and VFD cords are mounted with watertight glands and a 110volt male plug is installed. All VFD trim pots are adjusted and visually marked with default settings. Motor and VFD are test run and packaged in their own box. There is enough power cord between the motor and VFD that no wires need to be disconnected during assembly. Just mount the motor, mount the VFD, set the drive wheel with the included gauge block and you’re ready to start grinding!
